Aadhaar OTP verification now in 322 trains for online Tatkal booking, 3 crore fake user IDs busted
In New Delhi on Dec 11 (LatestNewsX), Parliament was briefed that the railways are now using Aadhaar‑based OTP verification for online Tatkal bookings on 322 trains. This change is expected to slash the waiting period for confirmed tickets by about 65 % on those routes.
At reservation counters, a phased rollout has put the same Aadhaar‑OTP step in place on 211 trains (as of Dec 4). As a result, 95 % of the 96 highest‑traffic trains now see quicker confirmation times, according to Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in his written reply to a Lok Sabha query.
The minister reported that user accounts have undergone extensive revalidation and verification. Since January 2025, roughly 3.02 crore dubious IDs have been deactivated. Anti‑bot solutions such as AKAMAI have been deployed to filter out illegitimate users, ensuring smoother booking for genuine passengers. Complaints regarding suspicious PNRs are now filed on the National Cyber Crime Portal.
Robust cyber‑defense layers—including network firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, application delivery controllers and web‑application firewalls—shield the reservation system. The infrastructure is hosted in a secure, access‑controlled data centre, monitored by CCTV and protected by end‑to‑end encryption. The facility meets ISO 27001 ISMS standards.
To further bolster cyber security, RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. offers comprehensive threat‑intelligence services, such as takedown, live monitoring, dark‑web surveillance, and digital‑risk protection, delivering actionable insights and faster incident response. Regular security audits are carried out by CERT‑In‑empanelled Information Security Audit Agencies. Additionally, CERT‑In and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre continuously monitor ticketing traffic to detect and thwart cyber attacks.
