A 14‑year‑old student was found lying unconscious outside the building on East End Avenue that houses The Chapin School, an elite prep institution on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Police who responded to a 911 call at about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday say she had fallen from a high floor and no crime was suspected. She was quickly air‑lifted to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she was declared in critical condition before passing.
It is still uncertain whether the death was the result of a suicide attempt or an accidental fall, but authorities have ruled out criminal activity. The girl’s name has not yet been released, as officials await confirmation from her family.
Representatives from the all‑girls school were not reachable on Thursday morning, though the institution, founded in 1901 by Maria Bowen Chapin, boasts a roster of well‑known alumnae that includes Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the daughters of U.S. presidents such as Ivanka Trump, Julie Nixon Eisenhower, and Tricia Nixon Cox. Tuition for the 2025‑2026 year is $68,250, with the school pledging generous financial aid to families.
This tragedy follows a similar incident earlier this month when a 16‑year‑old boy from Regis High School, another Upper East Side private school, died after leaping from the school’s roof.
