Trump to announce $12B in fresh economic assistance for farmers

WASHINGTON — Early on Monday, President Trump is set to unveil a $12 billion aid package aimed at helping U.S. farmers hurt by the continuing trade talks with China and other partners, according to officials at the White House.

The bulk—about $11 billion—will come from a newly created Department of Agriculture “bridge” program that will hand out payments to growers of corn, cotton, sorghum, soybeans, rice, cattle, wheat, potatoes and other row crops. Officials say the goal is to let farmers bounce back from years of unfair trade actions by foreign governments, the inflationary legacy of the previous administration and other market shocks. “These payments will give farmers the confidence they need to sell this year’s harvest and plan next season,” said a source inside the administration.

An additional $1 billion will be set aside for crop producers not covered under the new program. Bloomberg first reported the pending announcement in an article published this week.

Trump will preside over the announcement alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and other congressional leaders in a White House briefing.

The relief comes as the administration’s trade disputes—especially those involving China—continue to dent U.S. farm exports. The American Farm Bureau Federation estimates that growers could be facing a $28 billion loss for the 2025‑26 crop year, up from $17 billion a year earlier.

For soybeans, the U.S. ships roughly half of its output each year, with China typically taking about a quarter of the 29 million‑ton haul. However, stalled talks with Beijing have cooled purchases, leading to price swings. The remaining half of U.S. soybean production is used for livestock feed, cooking oils and biofuels such as diesel.

According to the Wall Street Journal, farm bankruptcies tracked under Chapter 12 spiked 60 percent in the first half of this year compared with 2024.
