The Income Tax Department in India has hit a big milestone—over 6 crore income tax returns (ITRs) filed for Assessment Year 2025-26 so far. Taxpayers and professionals are making it happen, and the numbers keep climbing!
The department shared the exciting update on social media platform X, giving a shoutout to everyone involved. “Thank you taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting,” they posted.
With just one day left until the deadline—September 15 for penalty-free ITR filing—the department is pulling out all stops to help. Their 24×7 helpdesk is buzzing with support via calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and even Twitter/X. “To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on a 24×7 basis,” they added.
If you haven’t filed your ITR for AY 2025-26 yet, now’s the time—don’t wait for the last-minute rush! The department is urging everyone to jump in and keep the momentum going.
Remember, back in May, the government extended the deadline from July 31 to September 15. This gave extra time for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and non-audit entities to handle big updates in the ITR forms. Those changes, rolled out in late April and early May, needed tweaks to filing tools and systems.
ITR filing trends show India’s tax base growing strong. For AY 2024-25, a whopping 7.28 crore returns came in by July 31—up 7.5% from 6.77 crore the year before. That’s a clear sign of better compliance nationwide.
To make things smoother this season, the department launched new online utilities. ITR-1 and ITR-4 for small and medium taxpayers went live in June. Then, in July, ITR-2 activated for individuals and HUFs with capital gains but no business income.
