Typhoon Bualoi: One dead, four missing, nearly 30,000 evacuated in Vietnam

Typhoon Bualoi battered central Vietnam, claiming one life and leaving four people missing while forcing more than 28,000 residents to evacuate their homes. The storm hit hardest in areas from Ninh Binh to Quang Ngai, with heavy rain and fierce winds stirring up fears of widespread flooding.

In Thanh Hoa Province, nearly 7,000 people fled danger zones, while over 16,500 evacuated in Ha Tinh and more than 2,100 in Quang Tri. A woman in Hue lost her life late Saturday when floodwaters swept her away; rescuers found her body the next day. Three others remain missing in Quang Tri, and one in Da Nang. So far, the typhoon has damaged or ripped roofs off 86 houses.

Travel chaos added to the woes, as airports in Da Nang, Phu Bai, Dong Hoi, and Tho Xuan canceled 42 flights and delayed 51 more. Officials expect services to bounce back by Monday.

As of Sunday afternoon, the eye of Typhoon Bualoi hovered off the coast between Quang Tri and Nghe An provinces. Forecasters say it will slam into land from northern Quang Tri to Nghe An, packing winds of 89-133 kph—that’s levels 10-12—with gusts reaching 150 kph. The strongest blasts should rip through coastal spots from northern Quang Tri to Thanh Hoa from late Sunday night through Monday morning.

Destructive winds from the typhoon’s outer bands already whipped north-central Vietnam’s coast, prompting local authorities to shut down hotels, restaurants, and tourist spots. They also cleared residents from risky beach areas in the central region.

Heavy rains from September 28 to 30 could dump 200-350 mm across north-central and northern Vietnam, with some spots seeing over 500 mm. Major rivers are swelling fast, raising the risk of severe flooding and major disruptions nationwide.

Vietnam authorities are telling everyone to stay inside, skip unnecessary trips, and obey evacuation orders as Typhoon Bualoi makes landfall. Keep an eye on updates from the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting for the latest on this powerful Vietnam typhoon.
