Ayodhya: Interfaith couple tie knot to celebrate sixth anniversary of SC verdict on Ram Temple

In Ayodhya, people celebrated the six‑year anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling on the Ram Temple with an unusual wedding.
Abhishek Yadav and Mehak Khan (also known as Indima), both local residents, tied the knot in the town that sits on the disputed site. They chose the date because the court’s landmark decision was issued on November 9, 2019, allowing a temple to be built at the Babri Masjid location and giving five acres of land to the Muslim community for a mosque.
The couple had been together for three years and decided to formalise their relationship on the anniversary of the verdict. According to Abhishek, he and Indima’s family faced opposition because of their different religions—he is Hindu and she is Muslim. His story says the girl ran away after her parents pressed her to end the relationship, and an FIR was later filed against him on allegations of abduction. He was arrested, then released after a court case, and now says the marriage is a fresh start for both of them.
“Even though the girl was with me, I was accused. After I was released, I decided to marry her,” he told reporters. “We chose this day to honor the Supreme Court’s verdict that gave the Ram Temple a chance. She is now 18, not 17 as before.”
Mehak confirmed that the decision to marry was voluntary and that any earlier accusations were false. “We have been together for three years. I am 18 and we had a Hindu ceremony. We’re happy and just want to protect the love we share,” she said.
The ceremony was blessing by Mahant Sant Das, who added that both parties had been steady companions for years and chose a Sanatan Dharma ritual for the wedding.
The 2019 Supreme Court judgment resolved one of India’s longest‑running disputes. It directed the construction of the Ram Temple on the original site and allocated land to the Muslim side for a new mosque, bringing closure to a divisive legal battle.
The Ayodhya wedding has drawn attention as an example of a cross‑religion marriage celebrated on a day that symbolises religious and legal reconciliation.
