AOC splurged nearly $50K on pricey hotel stays, dining and renting Puerto Rico concert venue where Bad Bunny performed
In the third quarter of the year, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez’s campaign spent just under $50,000 on a mix of lodging, meals and a venue rental in Puerto Rico. The principal committee paid $680.52 on July 28 to stay at the lavish Hotel Palacio Provincial, an “adults only” property that touts its “transcendent hints of the structure’s grand colonial past.” A week later, the same hotel cost the campaign an additional $1,507.26, and on September 29 an almost‑$9,500 bill was filed for the same stay. On August 25 the account also paid $3,861.20 to the historic Hotel El Convento, which markets its “old world charm and elegance.” Altogether, the funder logged $15,489.77 in lodging expenses in Puerto Rico from July 1 to September 30.
Meal and catering costs added another $10,743.13 for the same period, with $3,861.20 noted in the FEC filings for August 25. In addition to hotel spending, the campaign paid more than $23,000 to rent the Coliseo De Puerto Rico on June 24 and August 25; whether those payments were part of the Bad Bunny shows is unclear. The campaign also supported various “boutique” hotel stays and pricey food vendors along the U.S. mainland. From the campaign’s records, $6,600 covered a stay at the Hotel Vermont in Burlington, while Manhattan saw $2,000 spent at the Thompson Central Park Hotel and Brooklyn had a $3,000 stay at the Arlo Williamsburg. Dining expenses further reached $6,300 for a meal at the Italian restaurant Ama in Washington D.C.’s Navy Yard, and $11,500 for food at Mr. Ding‑a‑Lining ice cream, in D.C., Vermont, the Bronx and Latham, NY.
A campaign spokesperson responded that AOC frequently travels to Puerto Rico to back local causes and host events that require staff and security, emphasizing her pride in supporting grassroots organizing and advocating for residents of the island and the Puerto‑Rican diaspora.
