India Post, IIP join hands to develop eco-friendly parcel packaging solutions

India’s postal service is teaming up with packaging experts to make shipping greener and smarter. The Department of Posts (DoP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) in Mumbai, as announced by the Ministry of Communications on September 29. This partnership focuses on creating innovative and sustainable packaging solutions for India Post’s parcel services, helping to cut down on environmental harm while boosting efficiency.

The deal brings together IIP’s 58 years of know-how in packaging technology and DoP’s massive network of over 165,000 post offices across the country. Together, they’ll swap out old-school materials like corrugated boxes and cloth wraps for eco-friendly options that are tougher, cheaper, and better at protecting items.

One big goal? Designing special airworthy packaging for tricky stuff like liquids and fragile goods. These solutions will prioritize durability, shock resistance, and scalability so they work nationwide without breaking the bank. The team will also compare India Post’s current practices to global standards and create a pricing guide to show how sustainable materials stack up against traditional ones in cost.

To get everyone on board, they’ll produce training videos and graphics to teach postal workers the ins and outs of green packaging. As the ministry put it, “This strategic partnership leverages IIP’s expertise and DoP’s reach to build a strong system for sustainable packaging innovation.”

The move aligns with India’s push for environmental sustainability in everyday sectors. “It supports the government’s vision while improving safety and security for postal services,” the ministry added.

Dr. Sudhir Jakhere, Assistant Postmaster General for Business Development and Marketing at DoP, and Dr. Babu Rao Guduri, Additional Director at IIP, inked the deal at the Chief Postmaster General’s office in Maharashtra Circle. With this collaboration, India Post aims to make parcel delivery safer, faster, and kinder to the planet— a win for customers and the environment alike.
