Cyber scammers swindle Rs 1,000 crore from people in TN, police crackdown on

Cyber Fraud Hits Tamil Nadu Hard: Over Rs 1,000 Crore Lost in Just Seven Months

Hey folks, if you’re in Tamil Nadu, it’s time to stay extra alert online. The state has seen a massive wave of cyber fraud this year, with people losing a whopping Rs 1,010 crore to scams up to July. That’s according to fresh data from the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing, and it’s a real eye-opener on how cybercrimes are exploding in India.

But here’s some good news: Quick action by officials has frozen Rs 314 crore of that stolen money, and they’ve managed to return Rs 62.4 crore to victims with court approvals. For comparison, last year in 2023, the losses were even higher at Rs 1,673 crore. Out of that, Rs 772 crore got frozen, and Rs 84 crore went back to the affected people. Clearly, cyber fraud in Tamil Nadu is a growing threat, but the authorities are fighting back hard to protect citizens from online scams.

Tamil Nadu leads the nation in tackling these cyber threats, and they’ve launched some bold operations this year to bust fraud rings. Take ‘Operation Thiraineeku-I’, a statewide crackdown that nabbed 76 cybercriminals linked to 135 FIRs, 20 Community Service Registers, and 158 complaints on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP). These cases involved losses of Rs 41.97 crore from nasty tricks like online loan scams, investment frauds, and phishing attacks. The bust not only caught the bad guys but also warned other fraudsters to back off.

On a bigger scale, Tamil Nadu joined the all-India ‘Operation Hydra’ to hunt down cyber criminals operating across borders. As part of this, police arrested seven offenders from Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Assam, and Delhi. These guys ran organized cybercrime networks using fake call centers and digital tricks to cheat people out of huge amounts. It’s a big win against interstate cyber fraud.

The state isn’t stopping there. They’ve detained 18 cyber offenders under the tough Goondas Act, showing zero tolerance for these crimes. Senior officials say these moves aim to punish the guilty and break down fraud networks before they can hurt more victims. To stay safe from cyber fraud, they urge everyone to be vigilant: Don’t share personal info online, and report any suspicious activity right away via the NCRP portal or state helplines.

With cybercrimes on the rise across India, Tamil Nadu’s efforts highlight how important it is to fight back. Stay smart online, and let’s keep our money safe!
