UAE delegation visits Belgium to enhance cooperation in energy, sustainability

A top UAE team, headed by Abdulla Balalaa, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, wrapped up a key visit to Belgium this week. The trip focused on boosting ties in energy, water management, and sustainability efforts between the two nations.

This came right after Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Maxime Prevot, visited Abu Dhabi. There, he sat down with UAE’s Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Balalaa and his group met with high-ranking Belgian leaders, including Energy Minister Mathieu Bihet and Ambassador Willem van de Voorde, Belgium’s Special Envoy for Climate and Environment. They also chatted with experts from Belgium’s energy sector, sustainability groups, and universities.

Talks centered on the UAE’s push to build stronger partnerships for energy security, speeding up the shift to clean energy, and hitting United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These discussions highlight how the UAE and Belgium want to team up on global challenges like climate change and renewable energy.

During the visit, Balalaa checked out the massive Port of Antwerp-Bruges, guided by its chairman, Johan Klaps. A big highlight: Khalifa University from the UAE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Belgium’s Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), a top sustainability hub. The deal aims to spark joint research and innovation for a greener future, covering everything from clean energy tech to water solutions.

The trip ended with a lively reception pulling together top officials, business leaders, and academics from both sides. It spotlighted fresh chances for UAE-Belgium collaboration in energy, water, and sustainability projects.

Balalaa shared his thoughts: “This visit shows the UAE’s rock-solid dedication to tightening our bond with Belgium. We’re teaming up on key areas like nuclear and renewable energy, water security, and cutting-edge innovation. Partnerships like the one between our institutions prove we’re turning words into real steps forward—creating lasting ties that help both countries and drive global sustainability and economic growth.”

Overall, the visit cements the UAE’s spot as a go-to partner in the worldwide energy transition. It sets the stage for deeper work in institutions, science, and business between the UAE and Belgium. The delegation featured reps from Masdar, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), and Khalifa University.
