Meet traders on GST cuts, promote Made-in-India goods with ‘Swadeshi Mela’ during festivals: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a clear message for NDA MPs: let’s boost made-in-India products this festive season! Speaking at a meeting in New Delhi on Monday, just before the vice-presidential election, PM Modi urged parliamentarians to organize ‘Swadeshi Mela’ fairs in their constituencies. These events, running from Navratri to Diwali, aim to promote local goods and celebrate self-reliance.
PM Modi highlighted how the recent GST rate cuts are creating excitement among people. He asked MPs to connect with traders and explain the benefits of these changes. “This is the season of festivals like Navratri, Vijayadashami, Dhanteras, and Diwali,” he said. “These are our cultural celebrations, but they should also mark our journey to self-reliance. Whatever we buy—decorative items or gifts—let’s choose made-in-India products.”
He even appealed to businesses to skip imported goods. PM Modi stressed that small steps like this can strengthen India’s economy. This isn’t new; back on August 25, he made a similar call to citizens to support Indian-made products during the festive season for better economic growth.
Adding to the good news, the 56th GST Council meeting has simplified the tax structure. They merged the old four slabs into two main rates: 5% and 18%. The 5% slab now covers essentials like food, dairy products, packaged snacks, utensils, agricultural machinery, handicrafts, sewing machines, and medical devices. Government sources say these GST rate reductions will make everyday items more affordable, help small-scale industries, farmers, and traders, and ramp up demand during the festivals.
By promoting Swadeshi and these GST changes, PM Modi wants everyone to play a part in building a stronger India. It’s a simple way to support local businesses and enjoy the festivities!
