Pathways on railway bridges strengthen safety and accessibility across NFR

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is boosting safety across its network by adding walk‑paths to railway bridges.

The move, announced in Guwahati on Thursday, aims to give train crews a safe, stable route while they inspect, maintain or work on bridges. It also helps emergency teams reach a stalled train quickly.

NFR has identified 943 bridges that need pathways. 382 bridges already have them. Work on 561 bridges is underway. During 2024‑25, the line completed pathways on 32 bridges. For 2025‑26, NFR plans to finish 109 bridges, with 49 already in progress. Over the next five years, the goal is to cover an additional 452 bridges.

The project is most active in the Rangiya Division (250 bridges), followed by Lumding (227), Alipurduar (200), Katihar (163) and Tinsukia (103).

Providing walk‑paths on bridges offers several benefits. It reduces the risk of falls and accidents for railway staff. It makes routine inspections and maintenance easier and quicker. And in emergencies, it lets locomotives and technical teams reach the site safely and fast.

Northeast Frontier Railway, which serves the northeastern Indian states, parts of West Bengal and northern Bihar, sees the move as part of a wider plan to modernise infrastructure and improve reliability for passengers and crew alike.

The initiative reflects NFR’s pledge to keep the rail network safe, efficient and people‑friendly across the region.
