In Bogota, Colombia, on October 2, Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in India’s Lok Sabha, didn’t mince words about the Narendra Modi government. Speaking at an event at EIA University, he called the biggest threat facing India today an all-out attack on its democracy.
Gandhi struck an optimistic note first. “India shines in fields like engineering and healthcare,” he said, adding that the country has real potential. But he quickly turned to the problems. “There are deep structural flaws we must fix, and the top one is this assault on democracy.”
He explained why democracy matters so much for a place like India, with its mix of religions, languages, and traditions. “India is basically a big conversation between all these diverse people and cultures,” Gandhi noted. With 16 or 17 major languages and multiple faiths, he argued, the nation needs space for everyone to thrive. “Democracy creates that space,” he said. “Without it, we’re in real trouble.”
Gandhi warned that tensions are rising between different ideas and groups across India. “Right now, there’s a full-scale attack on our democratic system, and that’s a huge risk,” he added. He stressed the need to protect these traditions and give them room to grow.
Turning his fire on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Gandhi accused their ideology of being driven by cowardice. He pointed to a recent comment from India’s foreign minister, who admitted China is far more powerful and not worth fighting. “That’s the core of BJP-RSS thinking—backing down from the strong,” Gandhi said.
He went further, referencing a story from Hindutva pioneer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s book. In it, Savarkar described how he and his friends beat up a Muslim man and felt thrilled about it. “If five guys gang up on one person and get happy from it, that’s pure cowardice,” Gandhi remarked. “This is the RSS way: bully the weak and flee from the powerful.”
Gandhi’s sharp critique highlights ongoing debates in India about democracy, diversity, and political ideologies. ()
