Srinagar, Oct 1 () – Jammu and Kashmir MP Mian Altaf Ahmad, who represents the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat for the National Conference, sat down with the Chief Engineer of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in Srinagar on Wednesday. They talked about the latest updates on building the Mughal Road tunnel, a key project to turn the route into a reliable all-weather road linking Kashmir Valley to Poonch district in Jammu.
The BRO is leading the construction of this vital Mughal Road tunnel. During the meeting, the Chief Engineer shared good news: the project is moving fast and staying on course.
Mian Altaf pushed for even quicker action to get the tunnel built soon. “This tunnel will give locals a year-round option besides the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, which often shuts down from landslides – just like we saw recently,” he said.
He highlighted how the tunnel could spark economic growth and boost tourism in the region by making travel easier for people and goods. For apple growers and traders in Jammu and Kashmir, it’s a game-changer. The new route would offer a steady way to ship fruits to markets outside the state, cutting delays, spoilage, and reliance on the frequently blocked national highway.
Mian Altaf also called on the BRO to speed up upgrades and maintenance for the important Shopian-Peer ki Galli road to ensure smoother journeys.
Approved by the central government, the Mughal Road tunnel project carries an estimated cost of Rs 3,830 crore. Experts see it as an essential backup to NH-44, which faces constant risks from landslides and bad weather closures in the area.
