Theegala makes first cut since April, lies 14th and Bhatia 37th

Sahith Theegala is bouncing back in style at the Procore Championship in Napa, US. The Indian-American golfer fired rounds of 68 and 70 to make the cut, showing flashes of the form that won him this PGA Tour event three years ago. This marks his first cut since April’s RBC Heritage, after battling a nagging neck injury that forced one withdrawal and four missed cuts.

Starting strong in sixth place after the opening round, Theegala climbed to tied-14th at the halfway point. He’s in good company there, sharing the spot with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who carded a 70 followed by a 68. Scheffler is using the Procore Championship to sharpen his game ahead of the Ryder Cup, and he hasn’t finished worse than eighth since March.

Fellow Indian-American Akshay Bhatia also made the cut, sitting tied-37th after a solid first-round 68 and a 73 in the second. With two rounds left in the Procore Championship, Bhatia has plenty of chances to climb the leaderboard. Remember, while Theegala missed the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Bhatia secured a spot in the second event and ended in the top 50 of the standings.

Leading the pack is Ben Griffin, a Ryder Cup rookie this year, who fired a bogey-free 66 for the second day running. That gave him a three-shot edge at 14-under 130. Trailing him at three back are two more cup contenders: fellow rookie Russell Henley with a 68, and top amateur Jackson Koivun, who went 3-1 last week at the Walker Cup to help the US team win at Cypress Point.

U.S. Open champ J.J. Spaun, another Ryder Cup hopeful, shot a 68 but sits five shots off the lead, tied with Lanto Griffin (70). The event at Silverado Resort features 10 US Ryder Cup team members, including captain Keegan Bradley, who’s keeping a close eye on everyone. Griffin joins three other rookies—Henley, Spaun, and Cameron Young—in the mix.

Scheffler admitted his second round had more birdies than the first, but he wasn’t thrilled with his overall play, ending eight shots behind Griffin. As the Procore Championship heats up, all eyes are on these stars gearing up for the big Ryder Cup battles ahead.
