In Amritsar, Punjab, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Tarun Chugh hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest GST reforms as a game-changer on Monday. He called it historic work that delivers real relief to India’s middle class and powers up small businesses.
“Prime Minister Modi has done something truly historic,” Chugh told . “We’ve slashed GST by nearly 2.5 lakh crore rupees. That money will fuel MSMEs and give the middle class a big break. Out of 99 items, most now fall under a 5% rate. People everywhere are pushing for more homegrown products and stronger Indian industries.”
Earlier that day, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat fired back at the opposition for slamming these GST 2.0 changes. “When have they ever championed reforms?” he asked. Shekhawat pointed out how critics once mocked GST as the “Gabbar Singh Tax” and promised to scrap it if they won power.
“The 140 crore people of India are excited about these GST reforms,” Shekhawat added. “Experts say it’ll keep over 2 lakh crore rupees in consumers’ pockets each year.”
The updates, greenlit at the GST Council’s 56th meeting earlier this month, kicked in today. India swaps its old four-rate GST system for a simpler two-slab setup: 5% and 18%. Luxury and sin goods stick with a 40% rate.
This GST overhaul aims to make life easier for businesses and shoppers. It should cut compliance headaches, lower everyday prices, and spark growth in sectors from agriculture and automobiles to FMCG and renewable energy. In the end, it promises to ease the cost of living, boost MSMEs, expand the tax base, and fuel inclusive economic growth across the country.
