Delhi riots: Court orders on Minister Kapil Mishra’s revision plea likely on Nov 10

In Delhi, a Special Court set a February 10 deadline to hand down a decision on a request from city Law and Justice Minister Kapil Mishra. Mishra is asking the court to reverse a lower court’s order to register an FIR against him over the 2020 Delhi riots, which killed 53 people.

Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh told the court to add Mishra’s case to the docket for the November 10 hearing. The judge had earlier restricted the lower court from forcing the police to file an FIR against the minister.

The hearing followed a complaint by Mohammad Ilyas from Yamuna Vihar. Ilyas accused Mishra of inciting the riots and named other lawmakers – Mustafabad MLA Mohan Singh Bisht and former BJP legislator Jagdish Pradhan – as aiding the unrest. The case began in April when an Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate ordered the police to book Mishra for the riots.

After the FIR order, AAP leader and former Delhi chief minister Atishi Nawaz pointed out the delay in police action and questioned why the Delhi government had not removed Mishra from the cabinet. She urged that the police arrest him and the Chief Minister take swift action.

The Delhi Assembly saw AAP protest demanding Mishra’s resignation. Mishra, who is also known for controversial remarks during the 2020 elections – calling Delhi “several mini‑Pakistan” and warning of an “India vs Pakistan” showdown on election day – remains a polarising figure.

This case highlights ongoing legal battles over the 2020 Delhi riots and the accountability of public officials.
