Ishwariya becomes Gujarat’s first village to provide LPG pipeline to every household

In a big step toward modernizing rural Gujarat, the village of Ishwariya in Amreli district has become the first in the state to provide piped LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) connections to every single household. This means no more dependence on gas cylinders, bringing convenience and safety to local families.

Home to about 2,000 residents and nearly 400 families, Ishwariya now benefits from a 24-hour, reliable supply of cooking gas through pipelines. For women and families in the village, this is a game-changer. No more trips to Amreli city, which is just 8 km away, to refill LPG cylinders. Cooking is now easier, safer, and cheaper.

Shilpaben Vamja, a local resident, shared her happiness: “Earlier, when the gas finished, we had to search for new cylinders either in our village or in the city. Now, with pipeline gas, that stress is gone. It’s also more affordable.”

This initiative is part of Gujarat’s smart village revolution. The project was made possible thanks to Rajkot MP and former Union Minister Parshottam Rupala, who hails from Ishwariya. The village already had good roads, drinking water, and sewer systems, and now it has an advanced LPG pipeline — a modern, eco-friendly upgrade that makes life easier for residents.

The village sarpanch highlighted that switching to piped gas has saved families time and money. The cost of pipeline gas is lower than buying cylinders, giving families financial relief. Women especially appreciate being able to cook without the hassle of managing cylinders and enjoy better meals for their families.

Located close to the district HQ, Ishwariya has earned the title of Gujarat’s first 100% Smart Village. It stands out for its unity, modern infrastructure, and community spirit. The village features paved roads, CCTV cameras operating round-the-clock, LED streetlights, restored stepwells, free Wi-Fi, a community hall, and green spaces — all signs of urban-level facilities in a rural setting.

Apart from its modern amenities, Ishwariya has a reliable water supply thanks to water harvesting systems and watershed projects. The village’s blend of tradition, technology, and sustainability has turned it into a model of rural empowerment and a shining example for other villages across Gujarat.

Gujarat is leading India in expanding Piped Natural Gas (PNG) infrastructure. The state has around 3.6 million domestic PNG connections as of April 2025, representing nearly 40% of its LPG users who are not part of the Ujjwala scheme. Between August 2023 and February 2024 alone, Gujarat added about 175,000 new PNG connections — a growth of nearly 6% in just seven months.

The state’s extensive gas pipeline network covers over 3,370 km, making it one of India’s largest, and about 84% of the territory and 87% of the population are now served by city gas distribution. Gujarat aims to cover the entire state with city gas soon, bringing clean, affordable energy to more homes and industries.

This progressive move toward piped gas and smart infrastructure highlights Gujarat’s leadership in clean energy and rural development, inspiring other states to follow suit.
