Drugs valued at over Rs 143 crore seized in Mizoram & Manipur; 3 held

Big Drug Bust in Mizoram and Manipur: Security Forces Seize Rs 143 Crore Worth of Narcotics

Security forces in Mizoram and Manipur struck a major blow against drug trafficking, seizing narcotics worth over Rs 143 crore and arresting three suspects in the last 24 hours. These operations target the growing menace of cross-border drug smuggling from Myanmar, highlighting the ongoing fight to protect India’s youth from addiction.

In Mizoram’s Champhai district, Assam Rifles launched a nighttime search near Zote village on Wednesday, acting on precise intelligence. The area shares an unfenced border with Myanmar, a hotspot for narco-trafficking. Troops spotted a suspect carrying a suspicious load and challenged him. He ditched the consignment and escaped into the dense jungle, but the team recovered 34.218 kg of banned methamphetamine tablets—highly addictive drugs valued at Rs 102.65 crore.

Not far away, in Aizawl district’s Zemabawk area, Assam Rifles teamed up with the Territorial Army for another raid the same night. They intercepted a suspect named Lalchchuanmawia, 25, from Zote in Champhai. A search turned up 12 grams of heroin worth Rs 8.4 lakh hidden on him. Officials handed over the drugs and the arrested man to the Excise and Narcotics Department for further probe. An Assam Rifles statement praised the effort, saying it shows their commitment to dismantling drug networks along the India-Myanmar border.

Meanwhile, in Mizoram’s Champhai district again, Assam Rifles seized 2.462 kg of heroin worth Rs 20.10 crore during a Tuesday night operation at Thingluang Kai in the Melbuk Road area. This haul adds to the momentum from Mizoram’s four-month anti-drug campaign, launched on September 1, which has already led to the biggest narcotics bust yet.

Over in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, which also borders Myanmar, police nabbed two drug smugglers in separate checks at a Naka Check Post in the last day. The seizures included brown sugar and methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 40 crore.

In the first bust, forces stopped a van driven by Md Nousad, 21, from Kakching district. They recovered 10.8 kg of methamphetamine tablets packed in 50 packets, along with the vehicle and a mobile phone. The drugs are estimated at over Rs 30 crore.

Soon after, another van pulled up at the same post. The driver, Hengougin Haokip, 23, from Kangpokpi district, got arrested too. Police found 125 grams of brown sugar stuffed in 11 soap cases, plus the van and his phone. This batch is worth more than Rs 10 crore.

These districts in Mizoram and Manipur—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip—face constant threats from the 510 km unfenced India-Myanmar border. Smugglers often push methamphetamine tablets, heroin, exotic animals, and other contraband through here, then ship them to Assam, Tripura, other Indian states, and even Bangladesh. The latest operations show security forces are ramping up efforts to curb this illegal drug trade and keep communities safe.
