After the case was filed, the special POCSO court in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, found a man guilty of raping a minor girl and handed him a 25‑year sentence of rigorous imprisonment.
He was also fined Rs 2 lakh. If he doesn’t meet the fine, the court has added another two months to his jail term.
Judge Debashish Daw, who presided over the trial, ordered the accused to pay Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s family.
Police say the assault occurred in a village under Dhupguri jurisdiction in October of last year. The man reportedly threatened the girl, forced her into sexual acts, and then warned her to keep the crime secret. The victim later became pregnant—a consequence of the assault—because the accused was her neighbour.
A written complaint was lodged with the local police station in March, after the incident was discovered. The police arrested the accused and filed a case under the POCSO Act. A DNA test of the child was conducted after the arrest and its results were submitted to the court.
Relying on the evidence and testimony from nine witnesses, the judge delivered the judgment.
Sources report that the victim’s family is relieved with the ruling. Police officials describe the outcome as a testament to the investigation’s success and the swift action taken following the family’s complaint.
