‘Criminal illegal alien’ mom of Karoline Leavitt’s nephew set to be released from ICE detention

On Monday, the mother of White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s nephew was granted release from an immigration detention center in Louisiana, almost two weeks after she was arrested in Massachusetts.

Bruna Caroline Ferreira was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as she was on her way to pick up her son from school on November 26. A judge set her release on a $1,500 bond—even though the Department of Homeland Security described her as a “criminal illegal alien.”

Ferreira is in the process of securing a green card, her attorney Todd Pomerleau told ABC News. The attorney added that the 33‑year‑old was born in Brazil and had previously lived in the United States under the Obama‑era DACA program.

DHS officials later said that Ferreira has a criminal record that includes an arrest for battery and an overstay on a visa that expired in June 1999. Pomerleau rebuffed that claim, insisting that “she has no criminal record whatsoever” and demanding that DHS produce proof of the alleged arrests.

According to Pomerleau, Ferreira is expected to be released later on Monday or early Tuesday. This story is still developing—please check back for updates.
