A Russian drone hit a train station in the northern Ukrainian city of Shostka, killing one person and leaving at least 30 others hurt, local officials said on Sunday. The attack was witnessed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who slammed the strike as “savage” and urged global powers to act decisively against the violence.
On his X account, Zelenskyy posted a photo of the wreckage and wrote that emergency crews were already on site helping the wounded. He added that both railway staff and passengers were among those injured. The president called the drone raid “terror — something the world must not ignore,” and demanded stronger international pressure to stop Russia’s daily strikes on civilians and critical infrastructure.
Local prosecutors later confirmed that a 71‑year‑old passenger was killed when the drone hit one of the damaged carriages. Shostka sits about 50 km (30 miles) from the Russian border, and the city’s acting mayor, Artem Kobzar, reported that medics were still working at the scene before his message on Telegram.
This attack follows a surge in Russian air raids on Ukrainian railway lines over the past two months. Just a day earlier, Moscow launched its biggest overnight bombing campaign targeting power grids and gas facilities across Ukraine, raising fears about the country’s energy security as winter approaches. The pattern of assaults underscores the ongoing threat to Ukraine’s transportation and essential services.
The international community has responded with calls for stronger support, but Zelenskyy urges that words be followed by action. He stresses that only “strength” can stop the persistent attacks and protect civilians from what he describes as “murder and terror.”
