Drug control officers from Delhi and Chennai raided a pharmaceutical factory in Tamil Nadu’s Sunguvarchatram on Wednesday. The investigation targets a unit linked to the deaths of at least nine children in Madhya Pradesh, who fell ill after taking what officials call spurious cough syrup.
The probe kicked off after Madhya Pradesh’s State Food and Drug Controller, Dinesh Kumar Maurya, asked Tamil Nadu’s drug control team to check out the Srisan Pharmaceutical Factory in Kancheepuram. Authorities want to know if this factory played a role in producing the faulty Coldrif cough syrup blamed for the tragedy.
In Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, pediatrician Dr. Pawan Nandurkar shared the latest update: the death toll from kidney failure among children has climbed to nine. “We first heard about seven deaths, but now it’s nine,” he said. Families gave the kids Coldrif to fight colds, coughs, and fevers, but soon after, the children developed severe kidney problems that led to their worsening conditions and deaths.
Dr. Nandurkar stressed that while the spotlight falls on the cough syrup, the full story might differ. “Investigations continue, and it’s possible the kidney injuries came from something else entirely,” he explained. Samples of the Coldrif syrup have gone to labs for testing, but results are still pending. Once those reports come in, officials expect clearer answers on the syrup’s role in these child deaths and kidney failures.
This isn’t the only action underway. Earlier Friday, officials collected more samples of the suspect cough syrup from a pharmaceutical unit in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, and rushed them for lab analysis.
Chhindwara’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr. Naresh Gunnade, confirmed that central and state teams are digging deep into the kidney failure cases among children. “We’ve gathered the samples and sent them off for examination,” he said. “We’re waiting on those reports to understand what caused these spurious cough syrup deaths.”
As the probe into the pharmaceutical factory and the tainted Coldrif syrup unfolds, families in Madhya Pradesh hold out hope for answers and justice.
