Police destroy two drug labs in Afghanistan

Afghan police have struck another blow against drug trafficking, destroying two heroin processing labs in the southern province of Uruzgan. The raids happened Monday in the Charchino and Chori districts, thanks to a solid tip-off from counter-narcotics teams.

Officers not only wrecked the labs but also burned more than three tonnes of illegal materials used to make heroin. They arrested three suspects linked to the drug trade and quickly handed them over to the courts after initial questioning.

This latest operation fits into a bigger push by Afghan authorities to crack down on narcotics. Just recently, police in the northern Baghlan province and eastern Ghazni province seized 210 kilograms of opium poppy and nabbed four alleged drug smugglers.

On September 16, things heated up in the northern Badakhshan province. Counter-narcotics police raided a spot in the Darayem district and uncovered a hidden drug processing lab. They found 170 kilograms of processed opium poppy ready to become heroin and arrested five people right there on site.

The Afghan government is ramping up its nationwide fight against drugs, going after traffickers, farmers, and production rings. Their goal? Wipe out poppy cultivation and stop heroin manufacturing for good.

Back on September 8, police in the southern Helmand province made even bigger waves. They dismantled six drug labs on the edges of the capital Lashkar Gah and in nearby districts. Officers seized over 10,000 kilograms of heroin-making materials, according to provincial police spokesman Mullah Ezatullah Haqqani.
