Kamala Harris reveals what Biden told her just before crucial debate with Trump that left her ‘angry’

Kamala Harris shares a tense moment from her short presidential run in her new book “107 Days.” Right before facing off against Donald Trump in their only debate, Joe Biden gave her a call that left her rattled.

Harris was holed up in a Philadelphia hotel room, prepping for the big September 10, 2024, showdown at the National Constitution Center. Biden rang to wish her luck, but the conversation quickly turned into a scolding. According to an excerpt in The Guardian, he mentioned his brother had chatted with some influential power brokers in Philly. Biden said these folks wouldn’t back Harris because she’d been speaking out against him. He claimed he didn’t fully buy it but wanted her to know, just in case her team was pushing her to distance herself from him.

Harris felt blindsided. Biden then shifted to reminiscing about his own past debate experiences, which only added to her confusion. She describes feeling “angry and disappointed” in the book, upset that her former boss made the call all about himself right before such a crucial moment. Instead of focusing on her big night, he distracted her with worries about hostile influencers in the key swing state of Pennsylvania.

Her husband, Doug Emhoff, noticed she was upset and urged her to “let it go” before stepping on stage against Trump.

During her 2024 campaign as the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris steered clear of slamming Biden publicly. But now, in “107 Days,” she’s opening up about the strains in their relationship after she stepped in for him. The book hits stores on September 23, and it’s already buzzing with insights into the chaotic 2024 election cycle.

In another excerpt from The Atlantic, Harris reflects on how the White House team kept repeating “It’s Joe and Jill’s decision” like a mantra as Biden weighed dropping out. Looking back, she calls it “recklessness,” not grace. “The stakes were simply too high,” she writes. “This wasn’t a choice that should have been left to an individual’s ego or ambition. It should have been more than a personal decision.”

Harris also dishes on her vice presidential pick. She reveals Pete Buttigieg, then the Transportation Secretary, was her top choice for running mate—not Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. But she worried it was “too big of a risk.” The campaign was already asking voters to embrace a woman, a Black woman, married to a Jewish man. Walz ended up on the ticket instead.
