In Bhopal, a key committee led by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met on Monday to discuss appointments for the state’s Human Rights Commission, known as the MPHRC. The group aimed to pick a new chairperson and two members, but they only agreed on one name due to disagreements on the others.
Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar and opposition leader Umang Singhar joined the meeting at the chief minister’s residence, along with other committee members. Sources say the panel approved Avdesh Pratap Singh, the principal secretary of the state assembly, as a new MPHRC member. Singh retires from his current role on September 30, so his appointment moves forward quickly.
The chairperson position and another member spot remain on hold as the group couldn’t reach a consensus. Umang Singhar, a Congress MLA and leader of opposition in the assembly, voiced concerns to reporters about the selection process. “The Human Rights Commission is like a temple of justice, rooted in our Constitution,” he said. “It’s the last hope for people when the government or other bodies fail them. I pushed back against appointing anyone ineligible.”
This comes right after the tenure of acting MPHRC chairperson Rajiv Tandon ended last Friday. The commission now faces a backlog of more than 4,500 complaints, adding urgency to filling these roles.
For context, the previous chairperson, Manohar Mamtani, finished his term without a direct replacement. That’s when Tandon, an existing member, stepped in as acting head. With so many human rights issues pending in Madhya Pradesh, locals hope for swift action to get the MPHRC fully staffed and running smoothly.
