Emmys In Memoriam leaves out Hulk Hogan, Polly Holliday, Tony Todd

The Emmy Awards turned emotional on Sunday night in Los Angeles, as the ceremony honored beloved TV stars who left us too soon. Fans watched in silence during the heartfelt In Memoriam segment, where singer Lainey Wilson and country legend Vince Gill performed the touching song "Go Rest High on the Mountain." As their voices filled the room, photos and names of late actors and creators scrolled across the big screen, leaving many in the audience misty-eyed.

Phylicia Rashad kicked off the tribute, sharing a personal memory of her on-screen son from The Cosby Show. She spoke warmly about Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who passed away on July 20, saying he "remains in our hearts." The crowd stood in a quiet applause, showing respect for his legacy.

The segment spotlighted icons like Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey, John Amos of Good Times, MAS*H’s Loretta Swit, and even rock star Ozzy Osbourne for his TV cameos. But not everyone made the cut on air—fans were quick to notice omissions, including Alice actress Polly Holliday, wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, What’s Happening star Danielle Spencer, General Hospital’s Leslie Charleson, and The Sopranos’ Jerry Adler. Other missing names were horror actor Tony Todd, Graham Greene, King of the Hill’s Jonathan Joss, Pee-wee’s Playhouse’s Lynne Marie Stewart, and Dennis the Menace child star Jay North.

These snubs sparked some online buzz and disappointment among viewers, as they do every year with the Emmy Awards In Memoriam segment. Time constraints and tough choices by the Television Academy often lead to debates. The good news? The Academy posted a fuller list on their website, making sure more names get remembered.

Shifting gears to the winners, Netflix’s gripping crime drama Adolescence stole the show, clinching the Best Limited Series Emmy and grabbing six awards in key categories. It was a night of firsts too—Tramell Tillman made history as the first Black man to win in his category (details still buzzing online). Seth Rogen took home Best Lead Actor for his role in The Studio, while Jean Smart shone again with Best Lead Actress for Hacks. Britt Lower impressed with Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Severance, and Katherine LaNasa scored Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Pitt.

The 2023 Emmy Awards reminded us why TV storytelling hits so hard—celebrating the living and remembering those who’ve shaped it. What did you think of the night’s big moments?
