New Delhi, Oct. 7 — A tense incident at the Supreme Court in New Delhi saw senior advocate Rakesh Kishore try to disrupt proceedings by throwing an object at the court’s bench headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai. Security officers stopped him before he could follow through, and while being escorted out he shouted slogans defending Hindu (Sanatan) faith.
The event attracted attention from senior Congress leader Udit Raj. Speaking to , Raj blamed the growing influence of “Sanatan ideology” for the attack. “The leadership has its influence, day and night on television, we only hear about Sanatan,” he said. “That influence will likely have an impact. Godse, who killed Mahatma Gandhi, was a Sanatan. Those who demand a Hindu Rashtra are Sanatanis, as are the men who killed Gauri Lankesh. Rakesh Kishore, who tried to throw a shoe at the CJI, is also a Sanatan. There is a list of Sanatanis,” he added.
Raj drew a comparison between India and Pakistan, warning that if religious leaders had interfered in governance after independence, India would have fared worse than its neighbour. “Pakistan has one religion that ties its country together. If the ‘Babas’ had taken power in India, everything would have unraveled,” he said. He also mentioned the murder of a Dalit youth in Raebareli that he said was carried out by goons associated with those leaders.
The controversy follows comments by CJI Gavai that drew criticism for appearing to invite “go and ask the deity itself” while hearing a plea about restoring a damaged Vishnu idol in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. Rakesh Kishore, who was detained after the courtroom incident, has shown no remorse. Speaking to , he declared, “I said it in court, and I will say it again – India will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan Dharma.”
