Patna, Dec. 9 – Bihar is in the grip of a hard cold front, with sharp winds whipping across the state. Meteorologists say a complex mix of atmospheric forces is driving frigid air into the region, driving temperatures down and throwing everyday life into disarray. The state’s Meteorological Centre has logged harsh conditions in districts such as Patna, Gaya, Saharsa and Katihar, with minimum temperatures hovering below 10 °C for several days and dipping to about 5 °C during the last two nights – well below what one normally expects this time of year. Although rain is unlikely, a light fog and morning mist are likely to make commutes difficult, especially in the early hours. The Meteorological Department advises travellers to stay alert and, whenever possible, avoid being outside in the coldest windows of the day. Wind speeds around 15–20 km/h are adding to the chill, particularly during sunrise and sunset, and dense fog could reduce visibility across several districts over the next few days. No significant temperature shift is forecast at present. In Patna itself, the high for Tuesday was 24 °C and the low 13 °C, both below average. As temperatures plunge, people are gathering around bonfires, donning warmer clothing and using indoor heating. Authorities recommend that residents, especially children and the elderly, stay indoors until necessary, and be extra cautious in the first part of the morning. The addition of westerly winds has intensified the drop in mercury, and experts predict that fog will linger in West Champaran, East Champaran, Patna, Gaya and Kaimur for the next couple of days, severely cutting sight lines. Yet daytime sunshine offers a brief reprieve, offering warmth amid the enduring cold. Weather scientists note that while maximum and minimum temperatures are unlikely to shift dramatically over the next four to five days, a further downturn could begin after December 15. Until then, only minor variations are expected. Officials and health professionals stress the importance of vigilance and prudent precautions to protect against the harsh winter conditions.
