On Nov. 25, police in Kolkata announced that the body of a Trinamool Congress employee and coal trader, found mangled with bullet fragments, was recovered from a mango orchard in the English Bazaar region of Malda district. The discovery came about 12 hours after the man went missing.
Authorities identified the deceased as Obaidullah Khan, a young coal trader who was active in the ruling party’s local wing. His family said he had vanished Monday afternoon after leaving his home in College More at around 4 p.m. on a motorcycle. He never returned, and despite repeated attempts, the family could not reach him. They filed a missing‑person report at Kaliachak police station that evening.
In the morning of Wednesday, the family was told that his body had been found in a mango orchard in the Katagar area of English Bazaar, and his motorcycle was discovered nearby. The family believes the death was a shooting, though they are unsure whether it stemmed from political rivalry, business conflict, or personal animosity.
The police have brought the body in for an autopsy and opened an investigation. No suspects have been detained or arrested to date. A senior officer of Malda district police stated, “The body has been sent for post‑mortem. It was riddled with bullets. Prima facie it appears that he was shot dead. A case has been registered. Investigation is on.”
The case comes against a backdrop of other tensions in the area; earlier this year, Trinamool Congress leader and businessman Babla Sarkar was shot dead on January 2 in Mahananda Palli of English Bazaar. Police had arrested nine people, including former municipal chairman Narendranath Tiwari, but the investigation is still ongoing. The authorities will keep the family informed as they continue their inquiry.
