California school district near Nevada caught up in trans student athlete row

A small school district near Lake Tahoe, California, could be forced to leave the Nevada athletic league it has played in for years because of California’s new transgender policies.

TTUSD—Tahoe‑Truckee Unified School District—lies in the Sierra Nevada close to the Nevada border. Instead of sending its athletes across difficult terrain to compete with other California schools, it has joined the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) for decades.

In April, NIAA reversed its stance on transgender athletes and now insists that competitors must play on a team that matches the sex listed on their birth certificate. California, on the other hand, compels TTUSD to join the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), where transgender girls can participate in female‑only sports in line with state law, according to the Associated Press.

The change has sparked a backlash from parents and local residents. “I don’t see how it would be fair for female athletes to compete against a biological male because they’re stronger, they’re taller, they’re faster,” said Ava Cockrum, a track‑and‑field student at Truckee High School. “It’s just not fair.”

TTUSD has suggested a two‑year transition, staying in NIAA through the 2027‑2028 school year before moving to CIF in 2028‑2029. However, civil‑rights lawyer Beth Curtis—who once served as a parent of TTUSD students—warns that approval from the California Department of Education (CDE) is unlikely.

“The CDE is not going to let you do it,” she said at a board meeting. “The CDE is in court defending its law against the current federal administration. They’re not here to grant a temporary exception.”

The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against California, arguing that its law allowing transgender athletes in girls’ sports violates Title XI, which bars sex‑based discrimination in federally funded educational programs. 27 states have introduced bans on transgender sports, according to the ACLU. The Post has asked the CDE whether it will accept TTUSD’s proposal but has yet to receive a reply.
