NCW Demands Quick Action on ‘Nude Gang’ Attacks on Women in Meerut
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has jumped into action over shocking reports of attacks on women by a so-called "nude gang" in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. On Monday, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote a strong letter to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP), demanding a detailed report within three days. This comes after the commission took suo motu notice of the incidents that have caused panic in the area.
In the past two weeks, media reports highlight at least four scary attacks in the Daurala area of Meerut district. Women working in the fields faced assaults from men described as "nude with long hair" emerging from the fields. The NCW statement on social media points to a specific report titled "Panic in Meerut due to ‘naked gang’ coming out of fields and attacking women." Rahatkar has ordered an immediate, fair, and time-bound investigation to catch the culprits fast.
To boost women’s safety, the NCW urged the DGP and Meerut Police to ramp up patrolling in the affected spots right away. "These incidents strike a severe blow to women’s dignity and security," the commission said, stressing the need for strict action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. They expect the Uttar Pradesh administration to deliver quick results and arrest the accused without delay.
This isn’t the first time the NCW has stepped in for women’s issues in Uttar Pradesh. Last month, Rahatkar sent Uttar Pradesh Women Commission member Dr. Meenakshi Bharala to Noida to meet the family of 22-year-old Nikki Bhati. Tragically, Nikki allegedly died after her in-laws set her on fire over dowry demands. Rahatkar condemned the dowry system as a deep-rooted social evil and called on everyone to fight it.
"Dowry remains a regressive practice that harms society, and its re-emergence demands serious reflection," Rahatkar said. She encouraged people to use India’s strong laws fully to root out this issue and urged the public to reject such outdated customs. The NCW’s efforts highlight the ongoing battle against crimes against women in India, pushing for better protection and justice.
