Inter Miami CF clinched the club’s inaugural MLS Cup in a 3‑1 triumph over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on December 7 in Fort Lauderdale. Messi delivered a standout performance, opening the match with an assist for a second‑half goal from Rodrigo De Paul and then threading the ball to Tadeo Allende in injury time, earning him the MLS Cup MVP award for two key passes. The victory also marked Miami’s first Philip F. Anschutz Trophy, the league’s championship cup, after only six seasons in the league.
Vancouver’s lone goal came at the 60‑minute mark, when Canadian international Ali Ahmed broke the dead‑heat by sending a powerful shot past goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo. Before that, Miami had taken an early lead at the eighth minute through an own goal by Édier Ocampo, who redirected Allende’s cross after a slick combination from Messi and De Paul near the touchline.
In addition to the on‑field drama, former Spanish stars Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets were honored as Icons of the Match presented by Royal Caribbean, closing their illustrious careers on a triumphant note. Both legends, who had already announced plans to retire after the 2025 season, lifted one final title before hanging up their boots.
The championship cements Inter Miami’s transformation into a powerhouse since signing Messi in July 2023, building on earlier successes such as the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. With a fifth playoff appearance and the club’s first championship, they become the 16th team to win the MLS Cup. The win also paves the way for the opening of Miami Freedom Park next April, promising a new era for the franchise’s home stadium.
