Punjab Police Cracks Down on Drugs: 85 Arrested in Massive Raids
In a big push to make Punjab drug-free, the Punjab Police nabbed 85 drug smugglers and raided 409 spots across the state on Thursday. This is the 201st straight day of the "Yudh Nashian Virudh" campaign, kicked off by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to wipe out the drug problem in Punjab.
The operation led to 62 FIRs being filed statewide, pushing the total arrests under this drive to a whopping 30,060 in just 201 days. Police seized 30.5 kg of heroin, 150 grams of opium, 766 intoxicant tablets or capsules, and Rs 2,290 in drug money from those caught.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has urged police commissioners, deputy commissioners, and senior superintendents to step up efforts for a drug-free Punjab. The state government even formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, headed by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to keep tabs on the anti-drug war.
More than 150 police teams, with over 1,100 officers led by 75 senior officials, carried out the statewide raids. They also checked 403 suspicious people during the day.
Punjab’s three-pronged strategy—enforcement, de-addiction, and prevention (EDP)—is in full swing. On this day alone, police convinced 61 people to seek de-addiction and rehab treatment, showing they’re not just busting smugglers but helping folks recover too.
Just before this, in another raid at 383 locations, police arrested 99 drug peddlers after filing 77 FIRs. That sweep uncovered 2.5 kg of heroin, 1.2 kg of opium, 5 kg of ganja, 65 kg of poppy husk, 1,108 intoxicant tablets or capsules, and Rs 6,770 in drug cash.
These back-to-back operations highlight Punjab Police’s relentless fight against the drug menace, aiming to build a safer state for everyone.
