Congress appoints 27 new district presidents in Uttarakhand

New Delhi – The Indian National Congress has reshuffled its state team in Uttarakhand, appointing 27 new district and city presidents to strengthen its local presence. The moves, announced by General Secretary KC Venugopal and ratified by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, are part of the “Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan,” a nationwide programme that aims to rebuild party units from the ground up.

The fresh appointments cover every district and key urban centres in Uttarakhand. In the hill regions, Bhupendra Singh Bhoj will lead Almora, Arjun Chandra Bhatt will head Bageshwar, and Suresh Dimri will take charge in Chamoli. Urban areas see new faces as well: Dr Jasvinder Singh Gogi will run Dehradun City, Alka Pal will run Kashipur, and Mamta Rani will steer Rudrapur. Other notable leaders include Baleshwar Singh for Haridwar, Vikas Negi for Kotdwar, and Deepak Kirola for Ranikhet.

The AICC’s process involved on‑ground observers, district reviews, and one‑on‑one talks with senior party members. The new presidents are asked to form block and mandal committees, launch membership drives, and report regularly on progress. Accountability measures will be tightened with periodic performance reviews.

Congress has suffered setbacks in recent state elections, especially in the BJP‑dominated Kumaon and Garhwal hills. By bringing in experienced workers and fresh talent from the youth and women wings, the party hopes to energise booth‑level operations and rebuild its voter base ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.

The “Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan” stresses merit‑based selection and aims to create a clear link between state leadership and grassroots volunteers. Party insiders say the new team will better reflect local loyalties and connect more directly with voters.

With the next Uttarakhand election a few years away, Congress is using this window to expand its network, especially in rural districts where it needs to claw back ground from the BJP. The reorganisation signals a serious, structured attempt to reclaim its lost influence in the hill state.
