A farmer in Mysuru district was killed by a wild boar on Friday, sparking fresh worries about wildlife‑human clashes in Karnataka.
The victim, 35‑year‑old Rangaswamy of Hadya village in Hullahalli hobli, was riding his motorcycle back home when a boar, hiding in roadside bushes, lunged at him. The animal knocked Rangaswamy off the bike, and he was mauled before local villagers could reach him. He was rushed to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru but died during treatment.
Police have opened a case at the Hullahalli station. Deputy Range Forest Officer Vinod Kumar and his team visited the hospital to learn what happened. The incident is the latest in a series of wildlife attacks on farmers in the region, which have previously involved elephants, leopards and tigers.
Farmers in the area are demanding that the government act quickly to curb the rising threat of wild animals. They also ask for compensation for Rangaswamy’s family.
The twin incidents of the farmer’s death and a separate tiger attack in Saragur taluk led to swift action from Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B. Khandre. He ordered an immediate halt to safari operations at Nagarahole and Bandipur tiger reserves and directed the deployment of all available staff to support tiger‑capture operations. He also instructed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and the Chief Wildlife Warden to oversee the effort.
These developments highlight an escalating challenge for Karnataka’s wildlife management and local communities caught between protecting livelihoods and preserving wildlife.
