Bengal Congress to hold Constitution recital programme to counter recent Gita recital event in Kolkata

Kolkata, Dec 11 (India‑Advisory Network Service) – The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) unveiled a new initiative on Thursday, aiming to counter the recent Bhagavad Gita recital that took place in the city. West Bengal Congress President Subhankar Sarkar delivered the announcement during a press conference at Bidhan Bhavan.

The party’s event, dubbed ‘Recitation of the Constitution by a Thousand Voices’, is scheduled for December 20 on Rani Rashmoni Road, Kolkata. In his remarks, President Sarkar explained that the programme will kick off with the singing of Vande Mataram to celebrate pluralism. He warned that divisions based on language, cuisine, dress and faith have escalated to a dangerous point nationwide, and that the Constitution, drafted by B.R. Ambedkar, is being eroded under state backing.

Sarkar framed the event as a stand against religious extremism. He blamed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and other Hindutva factions for spreading a Manuvadi mindset and divisive politics. “The politics of division is being enforced through comparisons such as Chandi Path instead of Gita recitation and Jagannath Temple instead of Ram Temple,” he said, adding that the Congress is firmly opposed to this approach.

Additionally, he announced a protest in the form of a sit‑in at Lok Bhavan from December 22 to 24, demanding that the 100‑day work scheme in West Bengal be implemented. This action is a reaction to the pause on new job‑card allocations and the withholding of funds for the state on political grounds.

Earlier, on December 7, the ‘Panch Lakkho Konthe Gita Path’ (Gita chanting by five lakh voices) took place at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, organised by the Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad, a coalition of monks and spiritual leaders from various monasteries and Hindu institutions. Thousands of devotees participated. The event drew notable figures such as Swami Pradiptananda Maharaj and BJP leaders including Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, Rajya Sabha MP and West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya, former state BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, MLA Agnimitra Paul, actor‑turned‑BJP leader Rudranil Ghosh, among others.
