Channing Tatum reveals why he was ‘afraid’ to work with Kirsten Dunst

Channing Tatum couldn’t hide his excitement while chatting about teaming up with Kirsten Dunst on his latest project. At the world premiere of his new movie Roofman during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, the 45-year-old Hollywood star opened up about that thrilling "pinch-me" moment of working with the talented actress.

Tatum, a big fan of Dunst’s work, revealed that his all-time favorite is her iconic role in the 1994 blockbuster Interview with the Vampire. "I couldn’t imagine doing what she did in that film at that age. Everything she’s ever done, I’ve been obsessed with," he told People magazine.

But here’s the fun twist: Tatum’s massive admiration for Dunst’s decades-long career actually made things a bit nerve-wracking on set. "I was so intimidated to work with her—and when I say intimidated, I mean I was afraid," the Magic Mike actor admitted with a laugh. "I just wanted her to like me. I was like, ‘Please like me!’"

Roofman draws from the wild true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger and struggling dad played by Tatum. The plot follows Manchester as he resorts to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by slicing holes in their roofs, earning his nickname "Roofman." After breaking out of prison, he hides out in a Toys ‘R’ Us for six months, staying under the radar while plotting his next step. Things get complicated when he falls for Leigh (Dunst), a divorced mom charmed by his vibe. His secret life starts crumbling, leading to a tense cat-and-mouse chase as his past catches up.

The star-studded cast brings extra firepower, featuring Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, Jimmy O. Yang, and Peter Dinklage. Director Derek Cianfrance helms this gripping tale.

Back in June, Tatum gave a sneak peek to Entertainment Weekly, sharing the challenges of bringing a real person’s life to the big screen. "It’s impossible to tell someone’s real life story in 90 minutes," he said. "I’ve only played two other real people in my life, and it’s not very comfortable. I feel a lot of pressure. It gets muddy."

Mark your calendars—Roofman hits theaters on October 10, 2025. Fans of Channing Tatum movies and Kirsten Dunst films won’t want to miss this one!
