On November 10, the Indian government announced a new rule that will force online retailers to add a “Country of Origin” filter to their product listings.
The change is part of the Department of Consumer Affairs’ draft Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Second) Amendment Rules, 2025. It wants every e‑commerce site that sells imported goods to let shoppers search and sort items by where they were made.
This move aims to make online shopping more transparent and give consumers a clearer idea of a product’s background. By knowing where a product comes from, buyers can compare local and international options more quickly and confidently.
“We want shoppers to make better choices,” said a ministry spokesperson. “A country‑of‑origin filter will help people see the full picture when they shop on a website.”
The draft rule is now live on the ministry’s website, and the public can submit comments until November 22.
Adding this filter also supports India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Vocal for Local” efforts. It helps “Made in India” products show up alongside imported goods, giving domestic manufacturers a level playing field and encouraging buyers to pick local items.
The rule will also ease monitoring for regulators. With a country‑of‑origin filter, authorities can quickly spot violations or mismatched product claims without doing a manual review of each listing.
For online shoppers and sellers alike, this change promises more clarity, stronger consumer rights and a boost for local manufacturing.
