Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Boosts Efforts to Preserve State’s Rich Literary Heritage
In Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami shared exciting plans to protect and revive the state’s scattered literature. Speaking at a special event, he highlighted how the Uttarakhand government, through the Uttarakhand Language Institute, is working hard to compile and restore these precious works. The goal? To keep local languages and dialects alive, ensuring future generations stay connected to their cultural roots.
Dhami stressed that this literary and cultural legacy from our ancestors isn’t just history—it’s the heart of our identity and civilization. "It’s our duty to safeguard it," he said, urging everyone to cherish this treasure.
The event unfolded on Sunday at the IRDT Auditorium in Dehradun’s Survey Chowk, marking Hindi Diwas. Dhami joined writers, poets, and language lovers from across Uttarakhand and beyond for the Uttarakhand Long-term Literary Service Awards Ceremony.
In a heartfelt moment, he honored legendary figures posthumously with the 2025 award: Shailesh Matiyani, Girish Tiwari Girda, Sherda Anpadh, and Hira Singh Rana. He also celebrated living contributors Somwari Lal Uniyal and Atul Sharma, calling it a true privilege to recognize those who have enriched Hindi literature.
Dhami praised these icons for passing on Uttarakhand’s vibrant culture to the youth through their creative works. "Hindi captures the soul of our people, and literature mirrors society," he noted. Writers, he added, guide us with their sensitivity and spark positive change—just like poets did during India’s freedom struggle.
He fondly recalled giants like Sumitranandan Pant, Mahadevi Verma, Shivani, and the ones honored today, who brought Uttarakhand’s struggles, daily life, and traditions to life on the page. Dhami also shouted out modern voices such as Atul Sharma, Prasoon Joshi, and Uniyal Ji, who keep this flame burning bright.
The CM reaffirmed the state government’s full commitment to promoting literature and culture. Through the Uttarakhand Language Institute, they’re pushing Hindi and other Indian languages forward with ongoing programs. Initiatives like the Uttarakhand Sahitya Gaurav Samman, Sahitya Bhushan, Lifetime Achievement Awards, and creative writing contests are helping nurture new talent and honor the old guard.
This push for Uttarakhand literature preservation shows how the state is blending tradition with progress, keeping its linguistic heritage alive for all.
