Karnataka govt approves one paid menstrual leave every month

Bengaluru – The Karnataka state government has decided to give every woman worker one paid day of menstrual leave each month. The move was announced by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil after the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The policy will apply to all sectors, including government offices, garment factories, multinational companies, IT firms and other private industries across the state.

“Women juggle work, household tasks and child‑care. Menstruation brings both physical and mental discomfort,” said Labour Minister Santosh Lad. He added that a committee had recommended 12 days of leave per year, and the cabinet has approved the measure. The state wants the rule to be implemented nationwide in both the public and private sectors.

In the same meeting, the cabinet also approved a Rs 200 crore fund for fertilizer stocking for the 2025‑26 fiscal year. It gave in‑principle approval for a Rs 2,000 crore bridge reconstruction and renovation program. Additionally, a new phase of labour residential schools for children of construction workers was green‑lit at an estimated cost of Rs 405.55 crore, with 11 schools planned.

These steps reflect Karnataka’s focus on women’s health, agricultural support and infrastructure development.
