PM Modi thanks “friend” Donald Trump for birthday greetings; says committed to taking ties to new heights

PM Modi Thanks Trump for Birthday Wishes, Boosts India-US Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a warm message for US President Donald Trump after receiving birthday greetings on his 75th birthday. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi called Trump "my friend" and thanked him for the phone call. He stressed that both leaders are committed to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Partnership to new levels.

Modi also voiced India’s support for Trump’s efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict. "Thank you, my friend, President Trump, for your phone call and warm greetings on my 75th birthday. Like you, I am also fully committed to taking the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership to new heights. We support your initiatives towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict," Modi wrote.

This exchange happened on a busy day for India-US relations. The US Trade Representative’s office sent Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch to New Delhi to push forward bilateral trade talks. Lynch met with India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal. Their discussions focused on next steps for the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the talks were positive and aimed at wrapping up a fair trade deal soon. Officials from both sides agreed to ramp up efforts for an early conclusion. They also plan to continue negotiations virtually to keep the momentum going.

The US Embassy confirmed the meeting was productive, highlighting the strong focus on boosting bilateral trade ties. India and the US have already completed five rounds of talks for this trade agreement. The sixth round, originally set for August, got delayed, but both countries are eager to move ahead.

These negotiations come amid some challenges. Back in July, President Trump announced 25% tariffs on Indian goods, raising hopes for an interim India-US trade deal to avoid higher costs. But tensions grew when he added another 25% tariff, making it 50% total, due to India’s imports of Russian oil. These tariffs kicked in on August 27.

India remains cautious about US demands to open up its agriculture and dairy sectors. These areas are vital for millions of Indian farmers and livelihoods, so protecting them is a key priority.

Talks for this Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) started in March 2025, with a goal to finish the first phase by October or November. Last week, PM Modi expressed optimism about the India-US trade negotiations. In another X post, he called New Delhi and Washington "natural partners" and said the deal would unlock huge potential for both nations.

"Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people," Modi added.

As India-US relations grow stronger, these trade talks could pave the way for even deeper economic ties, benefiting businesses and people on both sides.
