Trump unveils Lincoln Bathroom renovation — complete with gold accents: ‘Very appropriate’
Donald Trump unveiled a new look for the White House’s historic Lincoln Bathroom on Friday, posting before‑and‑after photos on Truth Social. The President touted a full marble makeover that replaces the old green art‑deco tiles with polished black and white statuary marble and gold accents.
“Old green tile was totally inappropriate for the Lincoln era,” Trump said, adding that the marble could even be the original material used by President Abraham Lincoln’s family. He highlighted the glossy mirrors, ornate trim and cinematic lighting that he says gives the room the elegance of the 1850s.
The renovation fits into Trump’s pattern of high‑gloss upgrades and ties into a larger plan to redevelop the White House. He announced the demolition of the East Wing to build a 90,000‑square‑foot, $300 million ballroom, claiming the project will be funded by private donors. The move has sparked criticism from historians and preservationists, who view it as a vanity project that ignores the building’s legacy.
A recent ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll shows that 56 % of Americans oppose removing the East Wing, with 45 % strongly against it. Only 28 % support the new ballroom, which Trump describes as “the most beautiful, most luxurious event space in Washington.”
Trump’s taste for lavish interiors has history—his earlier comments downplayed President Harry Truman’s 1945 redesign of the Lincoln Bedroom, which introduced blue tones and a mid‑century style. The current renovation, however, is framed as a return to historical authenticity.
The White House has not issued a response to inquiries about the renovation or the ballroom controversy.
