Police in Bhubaneswar opened a probe on Monday after an 18‑year‑old KIIT University student was discovered hanging from his hostel bed. The victim, Rahul Yadav, was a first‑year computer‑science scholar from Raipur, Chhattisgarh. His mother, Nirmala Yadav, lodged a complaint with Infocity Police late Sunday night, prompting the police to register a case at the local station. The family rushed to Bhubaneswar on Monday afternoon, and a post‑mortem was carried out at AIIMS Bhubaneswar with a magistrate in attendance; investigators are still waiting for the autopsy findings.
Initial inquiries focused on Rahul’s digital footprint, social‑media behaviour, and testimonies from hostel mates and relatives. The evidence revealed that he had maintained a long‑term relationship with a girl from his home district; she is currently studying in Maharashtra. According to the mother, the girl’s parents and brother—who are also from Chhattisgarh—harassed and intimidated Rahul, pushing him to take a drastic step. “Being aggrieved by the sad and unnatural death of her son, Nirmala Yadav has given a brief complaint alleging harassment of her son by the father, mother and brother of the said girl, all are from Chhattisgarh,” the police said.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities examining every facet of the case, including the involvement of the girl’s family, before moving ahead. KIIT University issued a statement expressing sorrow, calling the event “extremely sad and unfortunate.” The university also noted that the circumstances appear linked to a personal relationship, citing the mother’s confirmation that the student acted out of personal reasons.
The tragedy has prompted several state legislators—cross‑party—to demand a thorough and impartial inquiry. Earlier this year, KIIT faced heavy criticism after two Nepali female students died; the University Grants Commission has also set up a fact‑finding panel to investigate those suicides.
