Nine people lost their lives and 29 others were hurt after a huge blast ripped through the Nowgam police station in Srinagar on Saturday. Police were testing a batch of seized explosives when the explosion went off, officials said.
The shockwave shattered windows of buildings around the station and could be heard up to ten kilometres away. Fire spread to parked vehicles, forcing fire crews to fight flames while ambulances rushed victims to the Army base hospital in Badami Bagh and other nearby hospitals.
The explosive material that detonated was part of a raid in Faridabad where Jammu and Kashmir police, working with Haryana authorities, seized 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate and arrested a white‑collar terror network. One of the people killed was a Naib Tehsildar (Executive Magistrate) and another a local tailor; many bodies were badly damaged and are still being identified.
The incident prompted a swift response from the Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, who led an on‑site assessment with senior officers. Fire appliances battled the blaze and medical teams moved quickly to treat the injured officers.
The blast has raised questions about how the explosive was handled inside the station. Police are continuing investigations and will release the identities of the dead once details are confirmed. The event has intensified scrutiny on security protocols around explosive testing and storage in the region.
