Wipro’s Azim Premji Responds to Bengaluru’s Traffic Woes
Bengaluru’s notorious traffic jams have caught the attention of one of India’s top business leaders. Wipro Chairman Azim Premji recently replied to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s letter about the growing congestion on the city’s Outer Ring Road (ORR), a vital corridor for the tech hub’s economy.
In his response dated Wednesday, Premji recognized how serious the issue is, especially around key spots like the Iblur junction. He pointed out that Bengaluru’s traffic problems come from many sources, so no quick fix or “silver bullet” will solve them all. Instead, he suggested launching a detailed scientific study run by global experts in urban transport management.
“Wipro stands ready to help,” Premji wrote. The company even offered to cover a big chunk of the study’s costs, showing its dedication to improving city life. “We believe a collaborative, data-driven approach will bring the best results for Bengaluru,” he added.
Premji also turned down the chief minister’s specific idea of routing public vehicles through Wipro’s Sarjapur campus. He explained that the site is private property inside a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which brings up major legal, governance, and regulatory hurdles. “It’s not set up for public use,” he noted.
This exchange builds on Siddaramaiah’s letter from September 19. In it, the chief minister highlighted how peak-hour gridlock on the ORR hampers daily commutes, work efficiency, and overall urban living in Bengaluru. He proposed limited access through the Wipro campus as a way to cut congestion by up to 30% during rush hours, based on expert assessments.
Siddaramaiah praised Wipro’s role in Karnataka’s IT boom and socio-economic growth. He urged Premji to work with officials on a feasible plan. “Your support could make Bengaluru more efficient and livable,” the chief minister wrote, emphasizing better experiences for commuters.
Premji’s letter wraps up with a strong call for teamwork between Wipro and the Karnataka government to tackle these urban mobility challenges head-on. As Bengaluru grapples with rapid growth, such partnerships could pave the way for smarter traffic solutions.
