One held in connection with attack on BJP legislator Manoj Oraon in Bengal’s Alipurduar district
Kolkata – Police arrested a suspect in the attack on BJP MLA Manoj Oraon on Thursday. Ashutosh Mondal, a supporter of the rival Trinamool Congress, was taken into custody after the BJP filed a complaint at Kumargram Police Station in Alipurduar district.
The MLA said the police only captured one of the attackers. “The other attackers are still roaming free,” Oraon told reporters. “The authorities do not have the courage to arrest them.”
The incident happened while Oraon was touring his Kumargram constituency to hand out flood‑relief supplies. Earlier, the vehicle of BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh was attacked in Jalpaiguri district on the same route. Murmu was badly injured; Ghosh suffered only minor wounds. Both commuters claimed Trinamool supporters were behind the assaults.
After the assault, Oraon said his team was blocked from distributing aid, their vehicles vandalised, and even his security staff were attacked, with attempts made to take their guns. The BJP lodged complaints against five persons and urged a thorough investigation.
Alipurduar District President of the Trinamool Congress, Prakash Chik Baraik, rejected the claims. He said the incident was a spontaneous protest by locals who felt ignored by Oraon for a long time.
The incident highlights rising political tensions in the flood‑prone region of West Bengal. Authorities are continuing their probe into the multiple attacks on BJP officials, while local leaders call for calm.
