On Hindi Diwas, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared a warm message on social media, celebrating the day while spotlighting her government’s efforts to support Hindi-speaking people in the state. This comes at a time when her Trinamool Congress party has been raising alarms about “Bengalis in danger” and alleged harassment of Bengali speakers in BJP-ruled states. Pro-TMC voices have even called out what they see as “Hindi dominance” pushing aside regional languages like Bengali.
Political watchers view Mamata’s post as a smart move to balance things out, showing that she and her party fully back Hindi-speaking residents in West Bengal without any bias.
In her Hindi post on X (formerly Twitter), Mamata said: “Today marks Hindi Diwas. I send my heartfelt greetings to all my Hindi-speaking brothers and sisters. We celebrate this day with great respect every year and honor all languages. Since 2011, my government has rolled out several initiatives for the growth of Hindi speakers in the state.”
She highlighted key steps, like allowing Hindi as an official language in areas where over 10% of people speak it. Mamata also pointed to the recognition of other languages as official ones—Santali, Kurukh, Kudmali, Nepali, Urdu, Rajbanshi, Kamtapuri, Odia, Punjabi, and Telugu—plus pushes to promote Sadri.
The CM reminded everyone about setting up the Hindi Academy in West Bengal to honor the language. In education, she’s proud of launching a Hindi University in Howrah, starting Hindi-medium degree colleges in Banarhat and Naxalbari, adding Hindi postgraduate courses in various colleges, and offering higher secondary exam papers in Hindi. Even students at Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya can now take secondary exams in Hindi.
Mamata didn’t stop there. She mentioned free social security schemes for Hindi speakers and others in unorganized sectors. For cultural respect, the state has built top-notch infrastructure at the Gangasagar Mela and declared a two-day government holiday for Chhath Puja, a festival cherished by the Hindi-speaking community.
Wrapping up, she added: “Once again, congratulations to everyone on Hindi Diwas.” This message underscores West Bengal’s commitment to linguistic diversity and support for Hindi Diwas celebrations amid ongoing regional language debates.
