Chennai – December 28, 2025 – Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, M.K. Stalin, announced today that the high‑level flyover linking Aathupalam and Ukkadam Junction on Oppanakara Road in Coimbatore will be named the C. Subramaniam Flyover. The decision pays homage to one of India’s most revered leaders and the mastermind behind the Green Revolution.
In speaking about the naming, CM Stalin emphasized that recognizing leaders who transcended party lines and dedicated themselves fully to the nation is a noble tribute. He praised C. Subramaniam for the respect he earned nationwide through visionary leadership, a steadfast commitment to public welfare, and a lasting impact on India’s agricultural landscape.
The choice followed a request from Dr P.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, and the chief minister expressed his joy at dedicating a major infrastructure project in Coimbatore to a figure instrumental in shaping modern India. “Though he followed a different political path, his service to the nation and the people remains exemplary. It is an honour to commemorate such a towering personality,” CM Stalin remarked.
C. Subramaniam, widely acknowledged as the architect of India’s Green Revolution, played a pivotal role in transforming the nation from an agrarian underdog to a self‑sufficient food producer. His forward‑thinking policies laid the groundwork for substantial increases in food grain output, bolstering national food security.
Born on February 15, 1910, in Senguttai Palayam near Pollachi in Coimbatore district, Subramaniam enjoyed a lengthy and distinguished public career. He served as Union Minister of Agriculture, Finance, and Defence, later became Governor of Maharashtra, and represented constituents both in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and the Indian Parliament. A fervent freedom fighter, he participated in the Quit India Movement and spent time in prison in 1942 for his resistance against British rule.
In 1998, the government honored him with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, for his extraordinary contributions to the nation.
By naming the flyover after C. Subramaniam, the Tamil Nadu government acknowledges a visionary leader whose legacy continues to inspire future generations and whose work remains deeply woven into the nation’s progress.
