Martin Scorsese recalls tender Rob Reiner scene in ‘Wolf of Wall Street’: ‘Breaks my heart’
Martin Scorsese, who turned 83 this year, recently sent a heartfelt note to long‑time friend and fellow director Rob Reiner. In the letter Scorsese reflected on the powerful scene he shot in The Wolf of Wall Street in which Reiner played Leonardo DiCaprio’s father, Marcus “Max” Belfort. The director praised Reiner as “a master of comedy” and said he captured the human predicament of a father who loves his son but can only see the inevitable arc of his rise and fall.
Scorsese and Reiner became close in Los Angeles during the early 1970s, bonding over their New York roots and a shared love of humor. The 83‑year‑old Hollywood legend recalled a moment in the film that struck him as especially moving: “The man loved his son, he was happy with his success, but he knew that he was destined for a fall. There’s that wonderful moment where Rob watches as Jon Favreau explains to Leo that he can get out relatively unscathed if he just walks away from his company before the SEC has a chance to charge him with violations,” Scorsese wrote. He went on to describe the look on Reiner’s face as Leo hesitated, noting that “you got all the money in the world, you need everybody else’s money?” was a line that captured the father’s frustration so eloquently.
The essay also highlighted the classic scene from The Wolf of Wall Street, which has since gained even deeper personal meaning for the two men. Scorsese called Reiner’s performance a perfect blend of “a loving father, mystified by his son,” and added that the tenderness of his portrayal “breaks my heart to even think of it in this and other scenes.” The note concluded with reflections on loss and remembrance: “What happened to Rob and Michele is an obscenity; an abyss in lived reality. The only thing that will help me to accept it is the passing of time.”
Reiner, now 78, has built a storied career that includes credits for A Few Good Men and When Harry Met Sally. Though the director and his wife Daniele are still alive and continue to work and enjoy life, Scorsese’s tribute underscores the deep friendship and mutual respect that have defined their decades on and off the set.
